Não deixe de participar do Seminário Rede Cultura Jovem - O Espírito de Um Tempo Ainda há vagas para o Seminário Rede Cultura Jovem - O Espírito de Um Tempo, evento que acontece nos próximos dias 17 e 18 de novembro, no Centro de Convenções de Vitória. Será um grande debate sobre as especificidades das juventudes contemporâneas e suas diversas formas de expressões artístico-culturais, além de marcar o lançamento oficial do Programa Rede Cultura Jovem (PRCJ). O Seminário contará com a presença de jovens criadores e produtores de destaque na cena cultural local e nacional (Fred Entringer, Negra Li, Fábio Carvalho, Clarah Averbuck, Mc Popay e Klebs Júnior) e de especialistas e pensadores do campo da arte, cultura e juventude (Antônio Carlos Gomes da Costa, Maurício Abdalla, Ione Maria Mendes, Lala Deheinzelin, Beto Largman e Fábio Malini). O ator, performer e apresentador Michel Melamed conduzirá as discussões, que acontecerão no formato de talk-show, como se fossem programas de TV. A direção de arte e cenografia dos espaços do Seminário foram feitas pelo designer Jair de Souza, famoso por suas criações em diversos segmentos de produção gráfica e ambientações. Um cafezinho antes do Seminário Mídia local, formadores de opinião, lideranças juvenis, produtores culturais, gestores públicos e outros parceiros do PRCJ estiveram reunidos na última segunda-feira (09/11) para o café da manhã de pré-lançamento do Seminário Rede Cultura Jovem - O Espírito de Um Tempo. Na ocasião, a Secretária de Estado da Cultura do Espírito Santo, Dayse Lemos, apresentou os objetivos, as entidades gestoras, o histórico da concepção e desenvolvimento, as ações já definidas e a equipe do PRCJ. Segundo a Secretária, o Programa acredita que a cultura seja um caminho estratégico para o desenvolvimento do Espírito Santo. "Temos que ser capazes de permitir que os jovens capixabas vivenciem experiências que lhes tragam uma melhor compreensão de si mesmos e do mundo ao seu redor", disse.	Um portal de internet com a publicação de conteúdo colaborativo e uma rede de relacionamentos. Essas são algumas das principais funções do Portal Yah!, instrumento virtual que congregará todas as ações do PRCJ e que será um espaço interativo e de visibilidade na rede formada por jovens artistas, produtores culturais, gestores públicos, colaboradores, parceiros e, sobretudo, dos jovens de todos os cantos do Estado. O Portal Yah! será lançado durante o Seminário Rede Cultura Jovem - O Espírito de Um Tempo. Com essa ferramenta, haverá um maior estímulo ao processo de interação entre os diversos agentes e grupos de criação, produção, mediação e recepção cultural localizados nos 78 municípios do Estado. This is the whole transcript, in English, of a lecture course delivered by Martin Heidegger at the University of Freiburg during the winter semester of 1942-1943, following the path of Heidegger's profound encounter with Nietzsche and his return to the Greek thinkers before Socrates. It is Heidegger's preliminary response or answer to the "Problem of Socrates", the deepest and most fundamental problem facing man as man. Included here for the first time is a vital essay by Leo Strauss on Heideggerian Existentialism that traces the full trajectory of Heidegger's thought from Being & Time to his last thoughts which tend to embrace a dialogue with the spirit of the East. These are difficult but rewarding texts for those who are able to bring the efforts necessary to think them through. All the thinkers in question here (Nietzsche-Heidegger-Parmenides-Strauss-Plato) are essential to the recovery of the permanent problem of philosophy & the polis, and the resurrection of the "question of Being".

Despite being one of the best-known books of the 20th century, Finnegans Wake remains unread by the larger public. [3] In addition to the book's expansive linguistic experiments, Joyce's methods of stream of consciousness, literary allusions and free dream associations are pushed to the limit in the book, which abandons conventions of plot and character construction. Although many readers and commentators have reached a broad consensus about the central cast of characters and general story, many details remain elusive.

Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. The fifteen stories were meant to be a naturalistic depiction of the Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century.

A Portrait of the Artist as an Young Man is a key example of the Künstlerroman (an artist's bildungsroman) in English literature. Joyce's novel traces the intellectual and religio-philosophical awakening of young Stephen Dedalus as he begins to question and rebel against the Catholic and Irish conventions he has been brought up in. He finally leaves for Paris to pursue his calling as an artist. The work pioneers some of Joyce's modernist techniques that would later come to fruition in Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. The Modern Library ranked Portrait as the third greatest English-language novel of the twentieth century.

Barrett wisely separates out what can be reasonably ascribed to Everett, and what work remains to turn Everetts writings into a complete interpretation. Barrett does a good, clear job with this material and reader interested in the Everett tradition will likely find things that are useful for their purposes. The Philosophical Review

Jeffrey Barrett presents the most comprehensive study yet of a problem that has puzzled physicists and philosophers since the 1930s. The standard theory of quantum mechanics is one of the most successful physical theories ever, predicting the behavior of the basic constituents of all physical things; no other theory has ever made such accurate empirical predictions. However, if one tries to understand the theory as a complete and accurate framework for the description of behavior of all physical interactions, it becomes evident that the theory is ambiguous, even logically inconsistent. To deal with this dilemma, in the 1950s, Hugh Everett III initiated the quantum measurement problem. Barrett gives a careful and challenging examination and evaluation of Everett's work and of those who have followed him. The idea that the language we speak influences the way we think has evoked perennial fascination and intense controversy. According to the strong version of this hypothesis, called the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis after the American linguists who propounded it, languages vary in their semantic partitioning of the world, and the structure of one's language influences how one understands the world. Thus speakers of different languages perceive the world differently.

Language Turned on Itself examines what happens when language becomes self-reflexive; when language is used to talk about language. Those who think, talk, and write about language are habitual users of various metalinguistic devices, but reliance on these devices begins early: kids are told, 'That's called a "rabbit"'. It's not implausible that a primitive capacity for the meta-linguistic kicks in at the beginning stages of language acquisition. But no matter when or how frequently these devices are invoked, one thing is clear: they present theorists of language with a complex data pattern. Herman Cappelen and Ernest Lepore show that the study of these devices and patterns not only represents an interesting and neglected project in the philosophy of language, but also carries important consequences for other parts of philosophy. Part I is devoted to presenting data about various aspects of our metalinguistic practices. In Part II, the authors examine and reject the four leading metalinguistic theories, and offer a new account of our use of quotation in a variety of different contexts. But the primary goal of this book is not to promote one theory over another. Rather, it is to present a deeply puzzling set of problems and explain their significance

The debate about the origins of analytical philosophy has recently been revived by Michael Dummett's definition of analytic philosophy as based on the Fregean idea that the analysis of thought proceeds through the analysis of language. The contributors to this collection take a wider perspective on the rise of analytic philosophy. Dawkins devotes a few chapters to debunking astrology, magic, and clairvoyance, arguing that, as rational adults, we need to be critical about ideas. This notion serves him handily in chapters on coincidence: He explains the exacting calculations of probabilities to show that coincidences arent so unusual. Yet people have a penchant for finding patterns where there are none, which leads Dawkins also to address superstitions, the class of errors known as false positives and false negatives, and a wealth of cultural practices from rain dances to human sacrifice. He takes to task what he calls bad poetic science, in which he includes the theories of his rival Stephen Jay Gould in relation to what Gould sees as the three perennial questions in paleontology: Does time have a directional arrow? Do internal or external forces drive evolution? And does evolution occur gradually or in jumps? The spleens so heavy here that one can anticipate a debate, if not a duel. Final chapters provide him with a platform for reweaving the rainbow, enlarging on his earlier themes and metaphors in relation to memes, genes, and evolution. The speculative writing here is less rooted in complex gene analysis than in philosophy of the Dennett school. A sharp mind is much in evidence, delighting in exposing fraud, providing instruction, baiting a colleague, and indulging in his own high-wire acts of evolutionary dreaming.”

“Nonzero, from New Republic writer Robert Wright, is a difficult and important book--well worth reading--addressing the controversial question of purpose in evolution. Using language suggesting that natural selection is a designer's tool, Wright inevitably draws the conclusion that evolution is goal-oriented (or at least moves toward inevitable ends independently of environmental or contingent variables). The underlying reason that non-zero-sum games wind up being played well is the same in biological evolution as in cultural evolution. Whether you are a bunch of genes or a bunch of memes, if you're all in the same boat you'll tend to perish unless you are conducive to productive coordination.... Genetic evolution thus tends to create smoothly integrated organisms, and cultural evolution tends to create smoothly integrated groups of organisms. Admittedly, it's as hard to think clearly about natural selection as it is to think about God, but that makes it just as important to acknowledge our biases and try to exclude them from our conclusions. It is this that makes Nonzero potentially unsatisfying to the scientifically literate. Time after time we've seen thinkers try to find in biological evolution a "drive toward complexity" that might explain all sorts of other phenomena from economics to spirituality. Some authors, like Teilhard de Chardin, have much to offer the careful reader who takes pains to read metaphorically. Others--legions of cranks--provide nothing but opaque diatribes culminating in often-bizarre assertions proven to nobody but the author. Wright is much closer to de Chardin along this axis; his anthropological scholarship is particularly noteworthy, and his grasp of world history is excellent. Unfortunately, he has the advocate's willingness to blind himself to disagreeable facts and to muddle over concepts whose clarity would be poisonous to his positions: try to pin him down on what he means by complexity, for example. Still, his thesis that human cultures are historically striving for cooperative, nonzero-sum situations is heartening and compelling; even though it's not supported by biology, it's not knocked down, either. If the reader can work around the undefined assumptions, Wright's charm and obvious interest in planetary survival make Nonzero a worthy read. If the first chapter's title--"The Ladder of Cultural Evolution"--makes you cringe, the last one--"You Call This a God?"--will make you smile. --Rob Lightner”

As a boy, Brian Greene read Albert Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus and was transformed. Camus, in Greene's paraphrase, insisted that the hero triumphs "by relinquishing everything beyond immediate experience." After wrestling with this idea, however, Greene rejected Camus and realized that his true idols were physicists; scientists who struggled "to assess life and to experience the universe at all possible levels, not just those that happened to be accessible to our frail human senses." His driving question in The Fabric of the Cosmos, then, is fundamental: "What is reality?" Over sixteen chapters, he traces the evolving human understanding of the substrate of the universe, from classical physics to ten-dimensional M-Theory.

Assuming an audience of non-specialists, Greene has set himself a daunting task: to explain non-intuitive, mathematical concepts like String Theory, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, and Inflationary Cosmology with analogies drawn from common experience. For the most part, he succeeds. His language reflects a deep passion for science and a gift for translating concepts into poetic images. When explaining, for example, the inability to see the higher dimensions inherent in string theory, Greene writes: "We don't see them because of the way we see…like an ant walking along a lily pad…we could be floating within a grand, expansive, higher-dimensional space."

For Greene, Rhodes Scholar and professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University, speculative science is not always as thorough and successful. His discussion of teleportation, for example, introduces and then quickly tables a valuable philosophical probing of identity. The paradoxes of time travel, however, are treated with greater depth, and his vision of life in a three-brane universe is compelling and--to use his description for quantum reality--"weird."

In the final pages Greene turns from science fiction back to the fringes of science fact, and he returns with rigor to frame discoveries likely to be made in the coming decades. "We are, most definitely, still wandering in the jungle," he concludes. Thanks to Greene, though, some of the underbrush has been cleared. --Patrick O'Kelley

This book presents a new interpretation of Kant’s theory of knowledge that emphasizes the coherence and plausibility of his doctrine of transcendental idealism. Many interpreters believe that Kant’s transcendental idealism is an incoherent theory. Some have attempted to respond to this charge. Yet, as the author demonstrates, the interpretations that seek to vindicate Kant’s theory continue to be committed to some claims that evoke the charge of incoherence. One type of claim which does so is connected to the contradictory notion of subjective necessity. The other type of claim is related to the supposition that knowledge of the reality of appearances entails knowledge of the reality of things in themselves. The interpretation presented in this book does not involve any of these claims. Part One of this book presents an analysis of Kant’s concept of a priori knowledge and of his response to skepticism about synthetic a priori knowledge that specifies the content of such knowledge without invoking the notion of subjective necessity. Part Two presents an account of the non-spatiotemporality of things in themselves that does not entail knowledge of the reality of things in themselves. Part Three presents a new interpretation of transcendental synthesis, the transcendental "I" and of the role of transcendental self-consciousness in synthetic a priori knowledge which emphasizes the originality of Kant’s account of self-knowledge and subjectivity. The arguments presented in this book relate Kant’s ideas to current debates in epistemology, metaphysics and the philosophy of mind in a way that underscores their invaluable relevance to present-day philosophical discourse.

O supercomputador Ranger, que pode ser o segundo mais poderoso do mundo, foi revelado na sexta-feira (22/02) na Universidade do Texas, nos Estados Unidos.Criado pela Sun Microsystems, ele tem 15.744 processadores quad-core AMD Opteron - roda um total de 62.976 núcleos -, além de ter 123 Terabytes de memória e 1,7 Pentabyte de armazenamento.O supercomputador tem desempenho de 504 Teraflops, o que é equivalente a 500 trilhões de pontos de operação por segundo. Self and World is an exploration of the nature of self-awareness. Quassim Cassam challenges the widespread and influential view that we cannot be introspectively aware of ourselves as objects in the world. In opposition to the views of many empiricist and idealist philosophers, including Hume, Kant, and Wittgenstein, he argues that the self is not systematically elusive from the perspective of self-consciousness, and that consciousness of our thoughts and experiences requires a sense of our thinking, experiencing selves as shaped, located, and solid physical objects in a world of such objects. Awareness of oneself as a physical object involves forms of bodily self-awareness whose importance has seldom been properly acknowledged in philosophical accounts of the self and self-awareness. The conception of self-awareness defended in this book helps to undermine the idealist thesis that the self does not belong to the world, and also the claim that the existence of subjects or persons is only a derivative feature of reality. In the final part of the book, Cassam argues that the existence of persons is a substantial fact about the world, and that it is not possible to give a complete description of reality without claiming that persons exist. This clear, original, and challenging treatment of one of the deepest of intellectual problems will demand the attention of all philosophers and cognitive scientists who are concerned with the self.
